What is calorie restriction for adults?
Here's a good definition, but you can learn more by doing a search on it via the internet.
The Secret to Long Life? Very Short Meals
What is the secret to longevity? Researches say that it's eating less--way less--than the average American eats now.
How much less? The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the average inactive woman should consume 1, 600 calories per day; the average inactive man, 2,200. The "Live longer diet," say researchers, should total 1,120 calories per day for women and 1,540 for men. In exchange for this 30 percent calorie restriction, you could add 30 percent to your lifespan. How do researchers know? A variety of experiments have shown that calorie restriction in animals leads to longer life. If you want to live to be 100 years old, eat less--a lot less!

Haven't made an entry in this blog for some time, but today I have progress to report.
I have been on a veggie/cabbage soup diet regiment for the past few days, and this morning I weighed in at 103! Whoopee!
This is a radical diet, and NOT recommended for over a week, but it can dramatically kick-start a weight loss program. I use it when I want to drop a few pounds quickly.
Here's the diet:
Breakfast All-Bran Skim Milk
Lunch Fruit Apple/Orange/Raisins
Supper Veggie/Cabbage Soup (all you want) No fat crackers 3 Unsweetened, decaff tea
Snack Fruit
~~~ This works FAST! The home-made recipe for the cabbage/veggie soup varies, but here's what I use:
Whole head of cabbage Baby carrots Broccli Corn One potato Onion Green pepper Celery Butter Sprinkles (no-fat) Whole Can of Tomato Juice
Cook the veggies about an hour to hour and a half; then add the tomato juice, heat throughly for about fifteen minutes. Presto, you're set to go for a whole week; just warm it up each night.
~~~~
The bran for breakfast, along with so much fiber in the other food, will flush out your system. You'll lose faster and after the first day or so, your hunger pains will lessen. And besides, you'll be eating lots of the soup -- which you can have at any time of the day, if you feel starvation pangs!
At any rate, I have lost five pounds this week! And truthfully, I feel better. I call this my "De-tox Diet" in that it has NO sweets, NO fats, very few calories.
Again though, do NOT stay on this diet over a week -- and for those who have health problems, don't do it at all, without a doctor's approval.
Unfortunately I'll probably pig-out at the family Xmas gathering tomorrow; but this way, the damage is easily reversed. Especially since I'm starting from a low point of weight. My New Year's Resolution is going to be that I'll get below 100 and STAY there!

Whoopee! Weighed 104 this morning!!
I'm sure that is due to having done hard labor at the rental house in town yesterday, and eating almost nothing at all. I had to help paint trim on the foundation, plus do a lot of weeding around the fence and house. Hard work is rough on the back, and I think I strained a few muscles, which left me weak and tired, NOT hungry.
Other than that kind of exercise, I didn't bike or do much else. I am just glad I am losing weight; at least it gives me something to celebrate! If I can get down to 95, I'll consider my goal has been accomplished. And then, I'll maintain that weight, not get over 100 again -- like I have now, which requires much more effort to lose!

Friday Night
I weigh 106, seem to be stuck there. I'm still consuming around 1,000 calories per day, and have been riding my bike every day possible. This afternoon I went on the loop (5 miles of highway, several steep hills) so maybe tomorrow I'll hit 105.
As usual, I'm impatient to lose quickly. Today I didn't have much energy, and felt rather hungry. But after a large salad for supper, I had enough energy to ride the loop.
Now it's around 8:00 and I'm hungry again. Maybe some air-popped popcorn will satisfy my hunger; it'll have to!
Tomorrow it's off to town, a stop at the library and grocery shopping. Should get in a lot of exercise in the form of walking. Always a good thing for dieting!
